To turn that combination into a career – an opportunity to taste your future – you need equal parts of inspiration and education. The final cook-off of  the “HGT Taste of the Future” Schools Cooking Competition - open to Year 11 & 12 Students in WA Schools  was held on 28 July 2016 at Belmont City College.  The competition assisted in raising awareness and promoting chef apprenticeships to secondary school students in responding to labour and skills shortages in the hospitality and tourism industry. The competition gave students the opportunity to showcase their culinary skills and passion for cooking.

The prize for the winner is an apprentice scholarship valued at approx.. $4500 worth of Training College fees. In addition cash prizes were allocated as follows: First Prize Winner - $500; Second Prize Winner - $300; Third Prize Winner - $200; Fourth Prize Winner - $200; Fifth Prize Winner - $200. Schools attended by the top 5 finalists will also receive a $1000 voucher for kitchen / cooking equipment for their school.

Of the 10 finalists selected from entries from 23 schools,  the SCEA Hospitality program had three finalists and achieved the following outstanding results:

1st Place – Swan Christian College

3rd Place – Rachel Russell from Ellenbrook Christian College

5th Place – Mundaring Christian College.
