Recently on the 11th of August, the Year 11 and 12 Music students were given the wonderful opportunity to visit the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) for an excursion. We were delighted to have witnessed many young and talented classical musicians shine as they performed a range of stunning pieces as part of WAAPA’s ‘Classical Tuesdays’ lunchtime concert series. It was a privilege for us to hear the performances of the students, who competed for the Helen Court Prize, which will be awarded to WAAPA’s most outstanding graduating classical music student of 2015.
The performances we witnessed included a dynamic percussion piece, Cadenza for Six Timpani, a beautiful rendition of Charles Gounod’s L’absent for voice, and an incredible classical piece on the double bass, Concerto No.2 in B Minor. Along with these performances were also remarkable instrumentalists who showcased their gifts on the harp, guitar, piano and trombone. Overall, it was a tremendous experience for us as students to not only witness the phenomenal musical talent, but also to learn various performance techniques that will surely help us in the future.
