Secondary students of Ellenbrook Christian College have today been collectively recognised as the ‘Community Heroes of the Month’ by the City of Swan, in recognition for their efforts in mobilising the College to collect and donate items for the Ellenbrook Community Pantry.

“We have been encouraging all secondary students to bring in non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products to help stock the pantry”, said Year 11 student Ethan Cross in a letter thanking the school community.

“Over 300 products, including 91 cans, 54 dry goods, 61 jars and 94 hygiene products were donated.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the students, staff and families who have generously donated to support this initiative”, he said.

The Ellenbrook Community Pantry is discreetly located on Level 1 of the Ellenbrook Public Library and is accessible Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 4.30pm.

Members of the Ellenbrook and surrounding community experiencing short-term food need are welcome to visit the pantry and access basic items without feeling ashamed or judged.

“These kids are not only magicians - making magic happen, they are true blue, well deserving, young local heroes of the Month”, said Sher Keen, a coordinator of the Ellenbrook Community Pantry.

“After inviting me to talk with them about the Community Pantry, the kids got to work, having only two weeks to design, promote and conduct their food drive.

The effort and commitment of these students in securing the generous support of their peers, teachers and families went a very long way in assisting a significant number of locals by helping stock the Community Pantry shelves for several weeks”, she said.

Maintaining the dignity and anonymity of those seeking support is a unique feature of the Community Pantry, therefore the only requirement is that people adding or withdrawing items record the date, products taken and their initials in the logbook located within the pantry.

Anyone wishing to donate non-perishable, in-date, packaged foods, personal or household items may simply place their donation directly into the Pantry.

“We are delighted by the compassion and care shown by our Year 11 students and the College community that supported their initiative”, said College Principal Mr. Justin Krause.

“As a Christian school, Ellenbrook Christian College places great importance on service and supporting our community”, he said.

The students have been acknowledged at Ellenbrook Central shopping centre, who jointly sponsor the initiative.
