Reading Academy: Building Young Readers with Big-Hearted Mentors

At the most recent Secondary Assembly, a group of Secondary students were acknowledged for their involvement in the Reading Academy, a cherished initiative that has been running since 2019.

The Reading Academy pairs selected Year 1–3 students with dedicated Secondary student mentors, who volunteer their time each week to help young learners practise essential reading skills. Through repeated exposure to sounds (phonics) and words, the program helps build reading fluency, confidence, and a genuine enjoyment of reading.

These weekly sessions offer more than just skill development; they foster meaningful connections across year levels and demonstrate the powerful impact of peer support in education.

For Secondary students, especially those participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, these hours contribute towards their Voluntary Service component. Students in Years 10 to 12 can also log their time in their WACE community service logbooks, making the program both rewarding and practical.

The positive feedback from families has been a true highlight of the program:

“I just wanted to say what a great program Reading Academy is, and thank you to everyone involved in organising it. I have seen such a big improvement in my child’s reading, and she has gained so much confidence!”

“Thank you so much to everyone involved in the Reading Academy. I’ve seen a huge difference in both my children since they have been attending, and they have thoroughly enjoyed being there. We are very grateful to you for running such a wonderful and beneficial program.”

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the Secondary students involved for their leadership, patience, and commitment to supporting younger students on their reading journey.
